Call to action

“I AM NOT OK” is a call to action. It’s about not being content with anything that you are doing or anything that you have done. Each of us can do more — for ourselves and each other. There’s no time to “take it easy”. It’s not about being greedy, but it is about wanting more for yourself (there is a difference). It’s about pushing the limits (numbers and people) — as far as they can go. I AM NOT OK. -Joe Nice(Dubwar)

The party also has a greater meaning, it is a benefit for Hollis Hawthorne. Hollis is an incredible, innovative artist, dancer and Burning Man worker who was hit by a bus on February 28th while riding a motorbike in India. She has been in a coma ever since, and her friends and the Burning Man community have raised over $100,000 to transport her back to the states and for medical expenses.

She seems to be improving slowly and is opening her eyes, responding to stimuli, making verbal noises and moving fingers and toes on command. She is currently at St. Luke’s hospital in San Francisco and the goal is to raise $200,000 for her complete rehabilitation and care. All proceeds from the event will go toward this fund.

The story has completely captivated us as we’ve learned of the beauty of this person and about the incredible response from her friends and the entire tribe. It is a moving testament to this great woman and the huge, powerful family that she is a part of.

Keeping it downtempo….but not

When I go out its not for the people, place, coolness, etc. its for he music. Many people that agree with this or not, both live for those big breaks and builds alongside some ‘jackin’ beats. For me personally, a super eclectic music listener/producer?DJ, the best of what catches my ears is not only listen-able on the dance floor, but also at home, in bed, and in my own head. Sure every now and then we all love the “IN YO FACE” sweaty hard club banger nights, but its more than that for the trained few. As an example one of my favorite DJ collectives Orchard Lounge captures this perfectly. Spencer Lokken award winnng “land of Nod” captures this perfectly. While it may take some aquiring for some, for me it seems the pinnicle of perfect blending, beat selection, and all around timing. It might not be your favorite or best party mix out there but give it a shot….hear the skills and let the sounds flow from head to toe.

“Spencer Lokken, one-third of local DJ collective, Orchard Lounge, he’s currently a resident at Lava Lounge, Funky Buddha Lounge, and Moonshine, and regularly plays gigs outside of Chicago. Chosen as BPM magazine’s Next On the Decks grand prize winner for his “Land of Nod” downtempo mix, he’s also been featured in the Home Grown section of UR Chicago. Spencer ended his seven year relationship with corporate America in late 2006 to concentrate on making Style Matters the first company Chicagoans think of when you’re in need of booking highly talented and creative DJs. He also teaches the violin, and has been focusing on his own original production work.”
